(Hamburg 1658 - Vienna 1724) Still-life with a turtle, oil on canvas, 51.5 x 64.5 cm, framed
Provenance: European private collection The attribution of this painting has been confirmed by John Spike, who compares the picture thematically and stylistically with paintings securely attributed to Tamm’s Roman period. The artist is documented as having been in Rome between 1685 and 1695, living there with Frans van Bloemen, known as Orizzonte and his brother, Peter, known as Stendardo, according to Lione Pascoli. John Spike compares the present work with the painting, ‘Flowers and fruits with a hare’ (see Naturalia, a cura di G e U. Bocchi, Torino 1992, tav. 82). The picture also exhibits strong links with the painting, ‘Grapes and pomegranates’ held by the Museum der Schönen Künste in Budapest, especially in the treatment of the grapes.
