A jackdaw, titled in writing: "Le Choncas des Alpes, de grandeur naturelle, en allemand Berg Dohle Alp. Dohl, longueur total: 1 pied, 3 pouces, vel. 2 pieds, 7 pouces", an old inscription: "Christian von Mannlich (1741-1822)" on the reverse, watercolour on paper, mounted on paper (original mount), 36 x 26 cm, mounted, unframed, (Hu)

Johann Christian Mannlich was pupil of his father Conrad, subsequently of P. Verschaffelt in Mannheim and C. von Loo, Boucher and Natoire in Paris and Rome. From 1771 onwards he was first court painter in Zweibrücken. In 1799 he became court painter of Maximilian and director general of all painting galleries in Munich. Mannlich began as a rococo artist and became a classicist painter through his studies of the work by Raffael and Mengs. (B. Hagerty)
