A view of Klosterneuburg and its surrounding seen from Nußdorf, the church St. Leopold at upper left, titled "Vue de Klosterneuburg et les environs de coté de Nußdorf" on the reverse, signed and dated C. L. Billwiller ad nat. fec. 1805 Wien, watercolour on paper, 42 x 60 cm, mounted, framed, companion piece: A view seen from a slope near Nussdorf over the Danube and Vienna, signed and dated C. L. Billwiller fec. 1805, watercolour on paper, 42 x 60 cm, mounted, framed, (2)

Johann Jacob Lorenz Billwiller was a landscape painter and etcher, who was born and died in St. Gallen. Around 1805 he became a pupil of the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. He painted in the tradition of Martin von Molitor, Lorenz Janscha and Carl Schütz. Both motifs were transformed into etchings by Billwiller. It is noticeable that he put much emphasis on the impression of depth and on the magic colouring of the two sheets.
