German Court Painter, 18th Century
Portrait of a nobleman in oriental costume,
oil on canvas, 134 x 94.5 cm, framed
An attribution to Johann Heinrich Tischbein (Haina 1722-1789 Kassel) has been suggested. The present painting is a good example of the Turkish fashion that was prevalent in Europe after the siege of Vienna (1683) and the beginning of diplomatic relations with the court in Istanbul.
