Friedrich Gauermann is one of the most significant Austrian landscape painters of the Biedermeier period, with his style being substantially shaped by his in-depth study of Austrian alpine landscapes. Influenced by depictions of nature by Dutch painters such as Ruisdael, Wouwermann, Potter and Ross, Gauermann turned away from “veduta” painting as early as the 1820s, instead founding a new, naturalistic style of landscape painting. After his initial exhibition successes in the early 1830s, Friedrich Gauermann’s representation of woodland and alpine landscapes, and depictions of animals, made him one of the most popular painters of the Biedermeier period. The medium of the oil study enabled him to swiftly capture impressions he gleaned outdoors and on his travels, and let him practice his skills in depicting animals. These studies formed the basis of his larger canvases. They often have a fresher, more impressionistic character, as they were painted quickly using the wet-on-wet technique. This directness makes the oil studies particularly charming to a modern viewer.
