Ascan Lutteroth (1842 – 1923), who was to become one of the best-known Hamburg landscape painters of his time, initially trained in Geneva and Düsseldorf. Afterwards, he travelled to Italy, dwelling primarily on Capri, where the present View of Capri may also have been executed from an elevated position, the viewer’s gaze lingers on the Mediterranean Sea and the island’s typical cliffs. The painting’s strong, bright colours and light contrasts convey a soothing, pleasant atmosphere.
