With his brother Artur Timóteo da Costa, he worked as an apprentice in the mint in Rio de Janeiro. In 1894 he entered the Academy of Fine Arts and studied with Rodolfo Amoedo, Zeferino da Costa and Daniel Bérard. From 1906 onwards, he took part in the “Exposição Geral de Belas Artes”, where he received a gold medal. Together with his brother Artur and the brothers Carlos and Rodolfo Chambelland, he designed the decoration of the Brazilian pavilion at the International Exhibition in Turin in 1911 and remained in Europe for more than one year.
