Richard Knötel

Richard Knötel - 19th Century Paintings and Watercolours

(Glogau 1857-1914 Berlin) Capitulation of Emperor Napoleon III on 1 September 1870 following the Battle of Sedan, signed R. Knötel, oil on canvas, 75 x 125 cm, framed, (Rei)

In July 1870 the French Emperor, Napoleon III, declared war on Prussia, citing among other causes the Ems dispatch. The French assumption that the Southern German states allied to the Prussians would remain neutral proved incorrect. As a result, France was drawn into the war without support. Napoleon initially took command himself, but stepped down in August of the same year as, in failing health, he was scarcely fit enough to lead his troops. The battle of Sedan on 1 September 1870 was a decisive Prussian victory, after which the French troops surrendered and Emperor Napoleon III was taken prisoner. This defeat resulted in the proclamation of the French Republic. The present lot shows Napoleon III on horseback, raising his hat as a symbol of surrender after having ordered a white flag to be hoisted on the fortress of Sedan.
