The present drawing is an early work by Jakob Philipp Hackert from the time of his journey to Sweden. The composition is borrowed from Netherlandish models such as from landscapes by Salomon Ruysdael, which show also diagonal compositions where a little boat in the foreground serves as an optical barrier in contrast to the streaming water. „Like the most drawings from the Swedish journey, this sheet also shows a combination of spontanous observation of nature and of what he knew from previous compositional designs. Hackert thus included his landscapes in a proven tradition which he had studied for many years.“ (Nordhoff 1994, p. 221, No. 501).
