Joseph Gottfried Prechler
(Garsten, presumably 1674-1752) A panoramic view of the Austrian region „Mühlviertel“: Sonntagberg basilica, with the regions of Waidhofen, Ybbs, Seitenstetten, the Danube valley and Linz behind it; a miraculous image held by angels and hovering above Clam Castle, Grein, Amstetten and 58 other drawn and numbered villages and towns, whose names are mentioned in the base, surrounded by a golden frame, with the cardinal points Sepentrio (N), Meridies (S), Oriens (O), Occidens (W), signed Joseph Gottfried Prechler del. et. pinxit, Garsten in O. Öst. at lower left bzw. Johann Adam Prechler pinx., dated 1749 at lower right, tempera on vellum, 35 x 72 cm, framed (delicately carved wooden frame Holzrahmen), (Hu)
Compare:
“Der Sonntagberg und seine Umgebung” (1717) by Josef Gottfried Prechler, Landessammlungen Niederösterreich.
„The painter on parchment, Josef Gottfried Prechler in Garsten, presumably painted this work for Seitenstetten monastary two years before the inauguration of the pilgrimage church. Prechlers naive and softly coloured tempera pictures are typical for Austrian folk art of the 18th century. The presentation of the character and the topography are rather faithful“ (“Der Pergamentmaler Josef Gottfried Prechler in Garsten stellte diese Arbeit vielleicht für das Stift Seitenstetten zwei Jahre vor der Weihe der Wallfahrtskirche her. Seine naiv wirkenden, duftig-bunten Temperabilder sind typisch für die volkstümliche Malerei des 18. centurys. Sie geben aber eine ziemlich getreue Wiedergabe der Landschaft und der topographischen Verhältnisse.” P. Weninger, Niederösterreich in alten Ansichten, 1975, S 290.)
