Jakob Alt - Master Drawings, Prints before 1900, Watercolours, Miniatures

In a certificate of Nov. 11, 1986 Prof. W.Koschatzky identfied the sheet as a preliminary work for a watercolor (Albertina, Inv. Nr. 22572, 406x 518 cm, dated 1841) of a series of „Guckkasten“ pictures (Guckkastenserie Nr. 12, Fidei Kommiss No 97). From 1883 on Jacob Alt worked on the pictures for the Guckkasten series commissioned by Emperor Ferdinand I which included views of large formats of the „most beautiful“ regions of the Austrian monarchy. Jacob and his son Rudolf Alt created 170 vedutas, which were all signed by Jacob Alt who had received the assignment from the Imperial court. 46 pictures were made by the father and his son Rudolf, including the one with the Canale di Cattaro which was executed by Rudolf von Alt. In 1892 Rudolf confirmed the authenticity of those works which he had executed himself.
