Adolf Karl Senff

Adolf Karl Senff - 19th Century Paintings

(Halle 1785–1863 Dresden)
Portrait of a lady with hibiscus flowers in her hair, monogrammed, dated and inscribed A. S. 1834 Villa Sommariva, oil on canvas, 66 x 49 cm, framed, (Rei)

In the present painting, Adolf Karl Senff does justice to his Roman nickname ‘Raffaele di fiori’ only inconspicuously, with the detail of a red hibiscus flower used as hair ornament. This portrait commission was probably mediated by his friend in Rome Berthel Thorvaldsen, who worked for Count Giovanni Battista Sommariva (1760-1826). The designation at the bottom left ‘Villa Sommariva’ links this portrait to Sommariva’s magnificent villa at Lake Como, which was visited by travellers and writers from all over Europe. Senfft’s host in 1834 may well have been Sommariva’s son and heir Louis Gaëtan Sommariva (1792-1838), to whose family the sitter probably belonged.
