The present work probably dates from Brueghel’s period in Rome, circa 1660–1670. The painting is clearly inspired by the work of the Roman flower painter Mario Nuzzi. Individual flower paintings by Brueghel are rare certainly from before his move from Rome to Naples in 1671. A flower cartouche still life (private collection) that is almost exactly the same size as the present painting probably also stems from Brueghel’s time in Rome.
