Heinrich Tomec

Heinrich Tomec - 19th Century Paintings and Watercolours

(Prague 1863-1928 Vienna)
Hermannskogel with View of the Habsburgwarte, signed and dated Tomec 1909, oil on canvas, 180 x 248 cm, framed, (Rei)
Künstlerhaus label Vienna, 1909, 1368 confirmed by Mag. Paul Rachler.

The present lot offers a distant view of the Hermannskogel with the fortress-like Habsburgwarte visible on its summit. At 542 meters high, the Hermannskogel is the highest mountain in the Vienna municipal area, and lies in the Kahlenberg range near Sievering on the border with Lower Austria. The Habsburgwarte was sponsored by the Austrian Tourist Club in 1888 to mark the fortieth anniversary of Emperor Franz Joseph’s reign, and opened a year later. The 27-metre lookout tower is built in the architectural style of a medieval peel tower or watchtower, and was constructed according to the plans of architect Franz Ritter von Neumann. As well as commemorating the Emperor’s anniversary, since 1892 it has served as kilometre zero for the Austrian office of land surveys, as established by the Imperial and Royal Institute of Military Geography. The Habsburgwarte has been listed as a protected monument since 1972.
