Lot No. 517

Giovanni Grubas

Giovanni Grubas - 19th Century Paintings

(Venice 1830–1919 Pula)
Venice, a view of Campo dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo; Venice, the Molo with Palazzo Ducale, oil on canvas, each 68,5 x 92,4 cm, Framed, (2) (GG)

Catalogued and illustrated in:
Fabrizio Magani, La Venezia dei Grubacs, ZeL Edizioni, 2017, pp. 67, 119.

The first of the pair shows one of the most beloved views of Venice, showcasing the Doge’s Palace, the entrance to the Piazzetta, the Punta della Dogana and the Church of Santa Maria della Salute in the distance. The panorama is striking in its technical precision, lively brushwork and luminous palette.
The composition of the second of the pair shows the Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo and the Santa Maria dei Frari, the largest Gothic church in the city. It is the grandest and most important square in Venice, after the Piazza San Marco.

Giovanni Grubas was an acclaimed vedute painter. Both lots are beautiful examples of nineteenth-century paintings of Venetian vistas, in the tradition of Canaletto and Francesco Guardi.
