(Venice 1824–1890)

Christie’s London, 11 February 1994, lot 95;
Gallerie Caiati, Milan, 1995;
Private Collection Italy.

The present work shows the Piazzetta at night with the Doge’s Palace on the left. Across the Bacino, it is possible to make out the island of San Giorgio Maggiore, whose Benedictine church was built by Andrea Palladio in 1565. The columns dedicated to the patron saints of Venice, Mark and Theodore, are visible in the foreground.
The Molo and the Piazzetta are illuminated by a smattering of lanterns, while the reflection of the moon on the lagoon introduces an additional source of light. Numerous figures can be seen walking along and looking at the moon.
Luigi Querena’s canvas captures the mystery and magic of Venice at night.
