Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach

Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach - 19th Century Paintings

(Hadamar 1851–1913 Capri)
Girl holding a snake - innocence, signed, inscribed and dated K. W. Diefenbach Capri 1900, on the reverse remains of a label and inscribed with no. 297, oil on canvas, 151 x 100 cm, framed, (Rei)

Compare:
Claudia Wagner, Der Künstler Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach (1851–1913) - Meister und Mission, Munich 2007, CR no. 2.8.

We are grateful to Dr. Claudia Wagner for her scientific assistance and for confirming this work’s authenticity on the basis of the original.

The motif displayed in the present lot by Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach had already been exhibited in Munich in 1891 as part of the cycle “Paradise Regained”. In this cycle, however, the girl was not depicted with snakes, as in this image, but with a dragonfly on the back of her hand, instead. From 1896 onwards, Diefenbach used the snake to place the subject in a new context and numerous versions of this were created until 1913, according to Diefenbach’s diary entries. These seem to have been primarily produced during his stay in Egypt.
