The present canvas depicts the Apostle Peter, holding the keys of heaven. It relates closely to the bust-length portrait of the Apostle Peter conserved in the Staatliche Kunsthalle, Karlsruhe (inv. no. 240), which was traditionally attributed to Rembrandt, but is now associated with the work of his school.
Another work with which the present painting shows stylistic affinities is the Portrait of an Old Man by Rembrandt’s pupil, Govaert Flinck, sold at Sotheby’s, London, on 27 April 2006 as lot 42.
