Lot No. 133

Carlo Innocenzo Carlone

Carlo Innocenzo Carlone - Master Drawings, Prints before 1900, Watercolours, Miniatures

(Scaria 1686–1775)
The muses Urania and Thalia, signed Carlone, numbered 98, inscribed “Talia segna la comedia e si leva una maschura/ Urania segna lastrologia coronata di stelle con un globo”, pen and brown ink, grey wash, on fine laid paper, 21,5 x 33 cm, mounted, unframed, (Sch)

The present drawing shows a profane ceiling decoration at an early stage. The distinct shades lend considerable plasticity to the female figures. Several drawings are known by Carlo Carlone where he described the compositions with handwritten remarks. (compare Christie’s Paris, 22nd March2007, lot 230, a design titled “Diligenzia”). The drawing may have served thematically for a fresco decoration in a banqueting hall of a palace and can be dated into Carlone’s mature work. From the late 1740s onwards Carlone created mainly frescoes for castles in Lombardy.

The attribution to Carlo Innocenzo Carlone was confirmed by Dr. Peter Krückmann on the basis of a high-resolution digital photograph.
