After Louis Carrogis, called Carmontelle

After Louis Carrogis, called Carmontelle - Master Drawings, Prints before 1900, Watercolours, Miniatures

(1717–1806)
Group portrait of the Mozart family: The seven year old Wolfgang on the cembalo accompanied by his father Leopold on the violin and his sister Maria Anna, a landscape in the background, engraving in crayon manner, hand coloured, 32 x 19,7 cm, fixed to support, mounted, framed, (Sch)

The present depiction of the Mozart family goes back to at least one of three well-known versions of a famous watercolour by Louis Carrogis de Carmontelle. They may have been made on the occasion of the two first sojourns of the Mozart family in Paris (1763 and 1766). Leopold Mozart may have commissioned the print reproduction of the watercolour in order to promote the career of his son. The present print distinguishes itself through its particular fine printing quality and its sensitive colour washes and may have been executed in the workshop of Carmontelle. The other three known watercolours are kept in the British Museum, London (Inv. Nr. 1994,0514.48), the Musée Carnavalet, Paris (Inv. D. 4496) and the Musée Condé, Chantilly (Inv. 346).
