This hip-length double portrait, attributed to the Bavarian court painter Joseph Karl Stieler, depicts the twin sisters and daughters of the first King of Bavaria, Maximilian I Joseph, and his second wife Caroline Wilhelmine of Baden in front of an idyllic landscape. Amalie Auguste of Bavaria (Munich 1801-1877 Dresden) married John of Saxony in Dresden in 1822 and was Queen of Saxony from 1854 onwards. Her sister, Elisabeth Ludovika of Bavaria (Munich 1801-1873 Dresden), was the wife of Frederick William IV King of Prussia. She worked hard to maintain the close relations between Prussia and Austria and was the aunt of Empress Elisabeth (‘Sisi’) of Austria.
