Joseph Andreas Weiss attracted the attention of Duke Maximilian of Leuchtenberg (1817-1852). Following his marriage to Grand Duchess Maria Nikolayevna, the Duke also held the title Prince Romanovsky and was President of the Imperial Academy of Arts in St Petersburg. Weiss followed the Duke to St Petersburg, where was based from 1839 until 1852, travelling extensively through Russia. Shortly before his return to Munich, the Imperial Academy of Arts in St Petersburg made him an independent member. His paintings were hugely popular among the Russian nobility. Even after returning to Munich, Weiss continued predominantly to create paintings featuring Russian views.
