Lot No. 671

Albert Lynch *

Albert Lynch * - 19th Century Paintings

(Gleisweiler 1860 – 1950 Monaco)
On the Deck of the Aranella, signed Albert Lynch, oil on canvas, 64.5 x 46.5 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private Collection Germany.
The works of Albert Lynch are imbued with the spirit and elegance of the Belle Époque. His oeuvre consists mainly of charming portraits of ladies, which he primarily created using pastels. He worked with oils less frequently, albeit with no less skill, as this lot proves. His fashionably elegant approach made him a greatly sought-after social painter. Indeed, the painting ‘On the Deck of the Aranella’ seems to have been commissioned by Grand Duke Frederick-Francis II of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Lynch had painted the Grand Duke’s yacht for him as far back as 1891 but the lot shown here, however, goes much further in its depiction: it leads us to the deck of the yacht, where a young, self-confident lady is approaching the viewer. The name of the yacht, ‘Aranella’, is written in red on her simple black dress, with the lady almost seeming to embody the spirit of sport and the sailboat itself.
