Domenico di Michelino
(Florence 1417? - 1491)
The Madonna and Child with Saints Peter and John the Baptist, tempera and oil on gold ground panel, pointed top, 55 x 36 cm, framed
We are grateful to Alessandro Tomei for confirming the attribution and for his help in cataloguing the present painting (written communication).
Everett Fahy also gave this work to Domenico di Michelino who was celebrated for his composition of Dante e il suo poema, commissioned by the operai of Santa Maria del Fiore in 1465 and still conserved in the Duomo in Florence.
The present work can be compared to a predella panel depicting San Pietro, conserved in the Museum of Santo Stefano al Ponte in Florence, formerly in the Church of San Pietro in Palco di Badia a Ripoli. The marble throne with its raised base and the concave back behind the figure of the Virgin also shows a marked resemblance to the throne of another panel attributed to Domenico di Michelino depicting the Madonna enthroned with the Child between Saints Biagio and Francesco, conserved in the Spano Art Gallery in Ploaghe (Sassari). According to Vasari, the painter was a follower of Beato Angelico and echoes of the latter’s style can be seen in the delicate elegance of the figure of the Virgin.
