Saint Catherine of Alexandria (?),
tempera and oil on gold ground panel, shaped top, 47 x 10 cm, integral frame
The saint is represented standing, turned three quarters to the left, wearing a crown and holding the martyr’s palm and a book. She is a canonised princess or queen, probably Saint Catherine of Alexandria. The broad diffusion during the middle ages of this type of devotional object, and of the cult of this saint, means that at times she was represented without her usual identifying attributes. The present panel was likely the right wing of a moveable triptych, of a type typical to mid-fourteenth century Florentine and Tuscan painting; on the left side of the integrated frame there are two hinge brackets.
