The present drawing is related to the ceiling painting „Diana’s Rest“, which Hans Canon painted for Seebarn Castle in Lower Austria in 1877, following a commission of the castle’s owner Count Wilczek, (see Drewes 1994, Cat. 163a). The ceiling painting which showed an allegory of the hunt decorated the staircase of the castle and was installed together with a painting series of important figures of Austrian history, including Canon’s portrait of „Graf (count) Kollonitsch“ as well as paintings by Hans Makart and Jan Matejko. The ceiling painting was destroyed in the World War II and is only known through the present drawing today. An oil sketch for the painting in a private collection which was exhibited in the Belvedere, Vienna in 1886 seems lost today (Drewes 1994, Kat. 163b).
