Carl Martin Laeisz was a painter and a watercolour artist of the Hamburg school. First he was apprenticed with a decorative painter; from 1824 to 1826 he studied at the academy of Berlin under Johann Gottfried Schadow und Johann Erdmann Hummel. He travelled to Switzerland and continued his studies painting gouaches under Johann Ludwig Bleuler. In 1828 and 1829 he sojourned in Paris. At the beginning of his artistic career he executed mainly gouaches of Italian and Alpine motifs; later on he painted also watercolours of German motifs. The opening of an exhibition in the presence of the Danish royal couple counted to his greatest successes.
