Cesare dell’Acqua was born in Pirano, near Trieste, in 1821. Trained at the Academy of Venice between 1842 and 1847, he moved to Brussels where his brother Eugène lived, and worked under the painter Louis Gallait. Dell’Acqua became famous for his historical and genre subjects.
Emperor Maximilian commissioned him to decorate the interior of Miramare Castle. He exhibited at the World’s Fair in Vienna (1873) and the International Exhibition in London (1874).
Considering the large size of the canvas this painting is one of the twelve works originally located in the Pompeian Room of Ambassador Errera’s Villa in Brussels, the decoration of which may plausibly have continued until 1875.
