In 1879, Rudolf von Alt spent the summer in the surroundings of Liezen, where his patron Nikolaus Dumba lived in a hunting lodge as a summer retreat. “The focal point of the year are the sheets the artist occasionally produced in [Dumba’s] summer residence near Liezen (26 August - 6 October) and during the outward journey through the the Gesäuse region via Admont (10 August). It was in these locations that the artist achieved the most astonishing painterly results, whether in depictions of the landscape, in studies executed in the vegetable garden, or on an excursion with the Dumba family, who tried their hand at watercolour painting.” From: Rudolf von Alt, Die schönsten Aquarelle aus den 8 Jahrzehnten seines Schaffens, catalogue, 294th exhibition of the Graphic Art Collection, Albertina, 1984, p. 129, exhib. no. 202, illustrated in the
catalogue, p. 132.
