Lot No. 659

Paul Louis Léger Chardin

Paul Louis Léger Chardin - 19th Century Paintings

(Paris 1833–1918)
Jerusalem, Kidron Valley with the Tomb of Absalom, signed, dated and with dedication P. Chardin 1886 a son ami Marius De Mierre, oil on canvas, 65 x 100.5 cm, framed

The present lot by the French painter Paul-Louis-Léger Chardin was probably created in connection with his travels to the Middle East. During his first trip to Egypt in 1863 he illustrated the comprehensive work of his friend Arthur Rhoné “Voyage en Egypte”, and supplied further drawings in 1881 for the work “Coup d’oeil sur l’état présent du Cairo ancien et moderne”. In 1879, Chardin accompanied Baron Ludovic de Vaux to Syria, Palestine and Lebanon.
Here he depicts the view through the Kidron Valley to the city of Jerusalem, with the Tomb of Absalom on the left. The latter, decorated with Ionic columns and a Doric frieze with an Egyptian cornice, extends between the rocks.
