Provenance:
European private collection.

The attribution to Jan Erasmus Quellinus was confirmed by Prof. Hans Vlieghe, Dr. Jean Pierre de Bruyn and Dr. Yvonne Bleyerveld independently from each other by means of a high-resolution digital photograph. The present drawing is a design for an altar painting with “The Last Supper” on the high altar of the church Onze Lieve Vrouw over de Dijle in Mechelen (1690). The large format and the fine and detailed execution of the sheet which differs in a few details from the final composition may suggest that the present drawing may have been a presentation sheet for the patron(s) of the painting.
