(1663-1743)
The martyrdom of Saint Blasius with the vision of the apotheosis of Saint Sebastian, after Carlo Maratta, pen, brown and black ink, brown wash, heightened with white, on laid paper, 59 x 35 cm, mounted, framed, (Sch)
Provenance:
Collection of Dr. Pietro Malenza, Verona, with the handwritten number "179949", Lugt 2101;
collection General von Heydeck (not with Lugt);
European private collection.
The present drawing is connected with an engraving by Robert van Audenaerde after the painting “The martyrdom of Saint Blasius” which Carlo Maratta executed in 1680 for Santa Maria Assunta di Carignano in Genova. The compositions of the drawing and the print are identical but mirror-inverted. The dramatic rendering of light in Maratta’s painting which was also translated into the engraving was achieved in the drawing through the contrasts of the brown washes and white heightenings. The drawing may have been executed as a model for the print due to the superb quality of the sheet and the identical composition with the print.
