Lot No. 146 -

Rosalba Carriera

Rosalba Carriera - Master Drawings, Prints before 1900, Watercolours, Miniatures

(Venice 1675-1757)
A portrait of a young woman as a muse with a laurel wreath and a book, pen and brown ink, on laid paper, 16,8 x 12,8 cm, mounted, framed, (Sch)

The present drawing is a preliminary study for a pastel with the portrait of a young woman as the female personification of poetry or philosophy (pastel on paper, 60,3 x 50,8 cm), which is listed in the catalogue of Neil Jeffares "Dictionary of pastellists before 1800" (J.21.1656). The present study is an excellent example of the rare preliminary drawings of Rosalba Carriera. The sheet was perhaps intended as a presentation sheet for a patron rather than a work drawing. A comparable drawing in pen and brown ink with the “Portrait of William Cavendish, Marquess of Harington, later 4th Duke of Devonshire" is kept in the Lehman Collection, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; drawing with the study of the "Portrait von Lewis Watson,2nd Earl of Rockingham" is in the British Museum, London (Inv. 2003, 0730.2): See: Francis Russell, "Drawings by Rosalba", in: The Burlington Magazine, March 1997, Vol. 139, No 1128, pp. 196-198, fig. 61, 62.

We are grateful to Neil Jeffares for the scientific support.
