Alexei Vasilievitsch Hanzen was the grandson and student of Ivan Aivazovsky. Between 1901 and 1910 he lived in Munich, where he continued his education under C. Salzmann, H. Mayer and E. Bracht. His first personal exhibition took place in Paris in 1908. Hanzen emigrated to Bulgaria in 1920 and then to Yugoslavia. He was a celebrated marine painter and participated in many international exhibitions
