Gyula Agghazy - 19th Century Paintings and Watercolours

(Dombovar 1850-1919 Budapest)
Dancing at the Market, signed, dated Agghazy Gyula 1882, oil on canvas, 157 x 226 cm, framed, (Rei)

Compare:
Friedrich von Boetticher, Malerwerke des 19. Jahrhunderts, Hofheim am Taunus 1979, vol. I, 1, p. 21, no. 3.

The Hungarian genre painter Gyula Aggházy had a great enthusiasm for music and painting, so much so that after his studies at the Conservatory in Budapest, he initially found employment as a violinist at the National Theatre. After this, he went to Vienna from 1869 to 1871 to study painting at the Academy, before undertaking further artistic training in Munich from 1871 to 1874. In 1874, he returned to Hungary and after a stay in Szolnok, he continued on to Paris, where he became a student of Mihály von Munkácsy. From 1897 onwards, he held a professorship at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest.
His genre scenes depict Hungarian folk life and draw on elements of the Szolnok school, whose style broke away from academic conventions and creates images laden with emotion. (JP)
