Cornelis de Man

Fred Meijer endorsed the attribution of the present painting to Cornelis de Man. He wrote (private communication November 2020): ‘This painting is an excellent and interesting work of Cornelis de Man, undoubtedly painted in Delft, probably in the 1670s. In Delft, de Man painted many genre scenes and his work can be associated with that of his fellow townsmen Pieter de Hooch and Johannes Vermeer[...]. De Man was highly interested in perspective and this is also apparent in his genre interiors, which often include interesting architectural motifs.’
Born in Delft, Cornelis de Man’s artistic development included brief sojourns both in Paris and in Lyon, before turning south to Italy, where he settled in Florence, Rome and Venice. By the year 1653, de Man was back in Delft where he forged a career as a successful painter. He is best known for his interior scenes of bourgeois families, clerics and scholars, though his observations from his travels often appeared within his works, particularly in the rendering of Italianate and naturalistic Dutch landscapes.
