We are grateful to Fred Meijer for confirming the attribution on the basis of a photograph. He dates the painting into the 1660s and compares the model of this peasant with van Ostade’s Three peasants drinking and smoking in an Inn sold at Christie’s, London, 11 December 2002, lot 70.
