Christian Georg Schütz I

Christian Georg Schütz I - Old Master Paintings I

(Flörsheim 1718–1791 Frankfurt am Main)
A Rhine landscape with a ferry, near Bonn with the Rolandsbogen, Drachenfels and the island of Nonnenwerth beyond,
oil on canvas, 74 x 92 cm, framed

The present painting with the topographically exact view of the Rhine valley between Bonn and Koblenz is one of the main works of the artist. Comparable paintings have been sold at Koller, Zurich, 19 March 1998, lot 85; and at Christie’s, Amsterdam, 13 December 2012, lot 787.

Christian Georg Schütz I was an incredibly talented painter of landscapes and idealised views, which were mostly cabinet size. He furthered his artistic development after trips to the Rhine and Switzerland, before ultimately working in the Royal Courts of Brunswick, Kassel and Mainz. His most important patron was the Comte de Thoranc, a French soldier who was Lieutenant du Roi in Frankfurt during the occupation of the imperial city. Johann Caspar Goethe, Goethe’s father, was a keen collector of Schütz’s romantic Rhine landscapes.
