Workshop of Peter Paul Rubens
(Siegen 1577–1640 Antwerp)
The Death of Decius Mus in a Battle against the Latins,
oil on canvas, 100 x 158 cm, framed
The present painting is a workshop repetition of Peter Paul Rubens’s 1616–1617 monumental work, the Death of Decimus Mus (oil on canvas, 289 x 518 cm, Liechtenstein Princely collection, Vaduz & Vienna), notable for its compositional influence drawn from Leonardo’s Battle of Anghiari, and for the transfigured expression, or exemplum doloris on the face of the felled Roman General Mus, rendering him as a secular saint.
