Victor Wolfvoet
(Antwerp 1612–1652)
Mercury and Argus,
oil on metal, 30 x 40 cm, framed
We are grateful to Bert Schepers of the Rubenianum, Antwerp for suggesting the attribution of the present painting to Victor Wolfvoet. The composition derives from Peter Paul Rubens’s oil sketch (Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, Brussels), made in preparation for a large canvas painting of this subject (Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid), part of a series of more than sixty paintings with mythological subjects, commissioned by King Philip IV of Spain for his new hunting lodge, the Torre de la Parada, near Madrid in 1636.
