Johann Conrad Seekatz
(Grünstadt 1719–1768 Darmstadt)
The Rape of the Sabines,
oil on canvas, 94.5 x 116 cm, framed
The present painting relates very closely to Johann Conrad Seekatz’s Romulus and Hersilia (sale, Dorotheum, Vienna, 9 June 2020, lot 105). The stylistic features and similarities in terms of the figural representation and composition of both paintings allow us to date them to around 1765, therefore belonging to the artist’s late period.
