Snuff tobacco has been wellknown since the 17th century in Europe. Special boxes were produced in order to transport snuff and later became a sought-after collection area. Rounded boxes with lids existed besides angular and rounded off ones which fitted in pockets. Apart from small pocket boxes there were also table boxes in existence. The materials which were used for their production included horn, tortoise shell, brass, silver and gold and were sometimes quite elaborately manufactured. Snuff boxes were a socially acceptable trinket in the 18th and in the 19th century.
