Christian Tangermann

Christian Tangermann - Master Drawings, Prints before 1900, Watercolours, Miniatures

(Westphalia 1760-1830 Berlin) Portrait of Friedrich Wilhelm Count of Schlabendorf (1743-1803), pastel on vellum, 23,6 x 18,4 cm, framed, (Sch)

Christian Tangermann (1760-1830) was active as a portrait painter and a miniaturist in Berlin, St. Petersburg (c. 1807-1809) and in Vienna (c. 1812) He left behind a large oeuvre of portasit paintings in oil or pastel including a series with portraits of the family of Friedrich Wilhelm II., King of Prussia and of the princes Karl of Prussia (1815, Berlin), Prinz Albert of Prussia Preußen and Friedrich Wilhelm III. The present pastel with the portrait of Friedrich Wilhelm Count of Schlabendorf (1743-1803) was executed in 1794. It is an excellent example of the great talent of the artist, who managed to capture the liveliness of the model with vibrant colours, a spontaneous gaze to the onlooker and with a soft modelling of the facial features.
