The present drawing may be a study for the female figure in the painting "La Philosophie" (Oil on canvas, 90 x 75 cm), 1774 (Galerie Eric Coatalem, Paris). The technique of red and white chalk is rather atypical for Lagrenée, the physiognomy of the young woman, however, corresponds with comparable figures in his paintings.
