Jean-Baptiste Isabey

Jean-Baptiste Isabey - Master Drawings, Prints before 1900, Watercolours, Miniatures

(1767-1855) attributed to, Napoleon II., King of Rome, Franz Herzog von Reichstadt, Portrait of the four-year-old boy with the breast star and the sash of the order of the Legion of Honour, c. 1815, black chalk, wiped, on vellum, 28,2 x 24 cm, mounted, framed, (Sch)

Literature:
Comp. E. de Basily-Callimaki, J.-B. Isabey. Sa Vie. Son Temps, Paris 1909, p. 144 and ill.)

Jean-Baptiste Isabey, who had painted members of the Imperial family in 1812 came again to Vienna on the occasion of the Vienna Congress. He executed several miniatures and portraits in watercolour of the four years old King of Rome. Several lithographs and engravings were made after them; however, no work is in accordance with the type of the person represented in the present drawing. One miniature which corresponds with the drawing is allustrated in a monograph about Isabey and was kept in the collection of Prince Victor Napoleon (Basily-Callimaki 1909, p. 144, with ills.). The vellum may point to its French origin. The loose and lively execution speaks for a sketch, which was executed after the model and may have served for a later watercolour portrait.
