Lot No. 113

Hendrick Avercamp

Hendrick Avercamp - Master Drawings, Prints before 1900, Watercolours, Miniatures

(Amsterdam 1585-1634 Kampen) Two figures on a sleigh, monogrammed HA (ligated), pen, brush and brown ink, over pencil, partly with watercolour, on laid paper, 11,5 x 16,2 cm, mounted, unframed, (Sch)

Provenance:
Anonymous collector’s inscription “d[e] Stom v[an] Kampen”; Private collection, Belgium.

The attribution to Hendrick Avercamp was confirmed by Dr. Holm Bevers and Dr. Peter Schatborn on the basis of a photograph.

A comparable drawing by Hendrick Avercamp with three figures on a sleigh is preserved in the Royal Collection of Windsor Castle (Inv. RCIN 906469). Another sheet with noble people on a sleigh is kept in the Kupferstichkabinett Berlin (Inv. KdZ 11835). The two figures on the sleigh may be applicable to the Bohemian Royal Couple, which sojourned in Kampen in 1626. The Windsor drawing is supposed to date from 1620-1626; the sheet in Berlin at about 1620-1634. The present drawing is beyond doubt from the same hand. It may have been excuted at about the same time and may be a variant of the drawings mentioned above depicting the ride on a sleigh.

We are grateful to Dr. Holm Bevers and Dr. Peter Schatborn for the scientific support.
