Gaspar van Wittel, gen. Vanvitelli

Gaspar van Wittel, gen. Vanvitelli - Master Drawings, Prints before 1900, Watercolours, Miniatures

(1653-1736) Follower of, Rome, Tiber river with a view of the apse of the church San Giovanni dei Fiorentini, pen and brown ink, grey wash, on laid paper, 22,8 x 36,5 cm, browned, some foxing, mounted, framed, (Sch)

Provenance:
Private collection, Germany.

Literature:
Vgl. G. Briganti, Gaspar van Wittel e l'origine della veduta settecentesca, 1966, p. 202, No 91; G. Briganti, Gaspar Van Wittel, L. Laureati and L. Trezzani, 1996, pp. 187-188, No 153; N. Spinosa (Ed.), Gaspar van Wittel: Views of Italy, Exh. Cat. Cesare Lampronti Gallery, London, 28th June – 28th July 2013, Cat. 8, pp. 32-33.

The veduta with the view of the apse of San Giovanni Dei Fiorentini was depicted with gouaches by Gaspar van Wittel three times in 1685 (Briganti 1966, Nos 89-91; Briganti 1996, Nos 151-153). The three versions have also in common that they show the Castel Sant Angelo and the staircase of the Ospedale dei Pazzi next to the banks of Tiber river.

The present drawing however concentrates on the apse of San Giovanni dei Fiorentini and the connected buildings with the Ponte Sant’Angelo. On the basis of stylistic and technical characteristics the attribution to van Wittel must be excluded. The present drawing may presumably derive from a follower of the mid-18th century.
