The French history and portrait painter Claude Marie Paul Dubufe began his career with classical and biblical scenes, although his first major work is now lost. His was taught by Jacques-Louis David, France‘s most influential painter during the French Revolution. Dubufe portrayed famous personalities, including Napoleon Bonaparte and Joseph Fouché, the Minister of Police of the Empire, as well as numerous unknown characters. The present lot depicts a young lady looking at a small painting. The artist frequently resorted to this motif, painting other ladies holding objects such as books, mirrors and jewellery. In addition to individual portraits, other works by Dubufe depict parents together with their children, among others. He repeatedly also portrayed his own family and himself.
