The Austrian painter Josephine Swoboda was the granddaughter of the lithographer Leopold Franz Müller (1807-1862) and daughter of Eduard Swoboda (1814-1902). She studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna. From 1886 onwards, she exhibited her work regularly at the Vienna Künstlerhaus. She subsequently participated in several international exhibitions in Munich, Hamburg, Berlin and in the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago. In 1890, she was appointed painter to the court of Queen Victoria, where she stayed during the summer months until 1899.
