The present drawing depicting celebrating peasants in a tavern dates from the the early time of Cornelis Dusart and may have been executed between 1670–1680. Dusart was the last pupil of Adriaen van Ostade and his earliest works show a strong influence of the teacher. It was until the 1680s that Dusart developed his own distinctive style. The execution of the drawing with a pointed pen and the tight lines are typical for him and already visible in his early work. A comparable drawing “Kolfspieler and themselves amusing peasants in front of a tavern” is kept in Boston private property (cf. B. Schnackenburg, Adriaen van Ostade, Isack van Ostade, Zeichnungen und watercolore, Hamburg 1981, p. 61 and 279, Fig. 73). Other drawings from the early period of Dusart are preserved in Paris, Musée du Louvre (Inv. F.00.683, F. 22806 ;
Schnackenburg 1981, Cat. No. F 207, F 210) and in Berlin, Kupferstichkabinett (Inv. KdZ 3870;
Schnackenburg 1981, Cat. No. F 23).
